Call for Papers: “Christian Theology After Christendom”

The editors of McGill’s JCREOR: The Journal of the Council for Research on Religion are pleased to announce a call for papers for our forthcoming volume (Vol. 2, Issue 2). This issue will be dedicated to critical reflection on the mission and theology of the Christian church. We invite applicants to critically assess the role of Christendom as a dominating/colonizing power and consider how theologies of the cross offer different possibilities in terms of the forms and functions of the church today. We are particularly interested in analyses that address the ways in which the generation of Douglas John Hall, Walter Brueggemann and Rudolf Bultmann sought to reclaim the theology of the cross as a means of decolonizing Christianity.

JCREOR is thus interested in submissions which explore some of the following questions:

  • How does the theology of the cross allow for a re-reading and re-imagining of ancient scriptures?
  • What is the relationship between theologies of glory, colonization, and evangelization?
  • Can Christian theology be a positive response to the global ecological crisis?
  • Is it possible to re-imagine Christian theologies previously been used in the service of domination as instruments of justice for the oppressed?

This list is by no means exhaustive, and we welcome submissions that broadly addresses the role of Christendom as a dominating/colonizing power in any area within the study of religion, including: Theology; Comparative Religions; Theory and Method; Philosophy of Religion; History of Religions; Sociology of Religion; Anthropology of Religion; Psychology of Religion; Religious Ethics; Critical Race Theory; Religion and Literature; Religion and Art; Religion and Linguistics; Religion and Health; Textual Studies. We welcome submissions that focus on traditions from any period or geographic area.

The submission deadline for Vol. 2 Issue 2 is March 29th, 2021. Submissions received after this date may be considered for subsequent volumes or issues. Articles should fall between 6,000 and 10,000 words in length, including footnotes. Longer items may be considered but should be discussed with the journal editors prior to submission.
