Religious Tensions and Cohesions

The editors of McGill’s Journal of the Council for Research on Religion (JCREOR) are pleased to announce a call for papers for our forthcoming volume (Vol. 5, Issue 1). The issue will be dedicated to examining and understanding social cohesions and conflicts, with particular interest in what role religion or religious traditions play within communities of diverse peoples. Tension points within communities arise for various reasons, but what role does religion play in creating or appeasing these tension points? How do neighbours and communities living in close proximity to one another live with religious diversity? How do religious communities manage tensions within their communities? Has religion produced solutions or conflict? What approaches to social and cultural tensions have allowed for cohesion, and what approaches have led to intensification of tensions?

The issue is purposefully broad as we would like to receive a diverse range of subject matter and academic approaches. Some ideas, not requirements, for topics include:

  • Intra- and inter-religious dialogue on university campuses
  • Religious communities coming together to raise concerns about Bill-21 in Quebec (or work dealing with tensions between religious traditions and secularism more generally)
  • Reactions to the Israel-Palestine Conflict (examining the way this has increased tensions across university campuses could be one way to approach this).
  • Analyses/critiques of initiatives started by different religious groups/interreligious groups that seek to foster pluralism, interreligious solidarity, etc. (e.g., Interfaith Youth Core, Interfaith America, Human Fraternity Dialogues, etc.).
  • Tensions between academia/research and religious communities (insider-outsider debates or the tensions between scholarly “construction” of religious categories and faith/spiritual traditions and practices fit into them)

We welcome papers from all subfields in the study of religion, including: Theology; Comparative Religions; Theory and Method; Philosophy of Religion; History of Religions; Sociology of Religion; Anthropology of Religion; Psychology of Religion; Religious Ethics; Religion and Politics; Critical Race Theory; Religion and Literature; Religion and Art; Religion and Linguistics; Religion and Health; Textual Studies We welcome submissions that focus on traditions from any period or geographic area.

The submission deadline for Vol. 5 Issue 1 is March 18th, 2024. Submissions received after this date may be considered for subsequent volumes or issues. Articles should be between 6,000 and 10,000 words in length, including footnotes. Longer items may be considered but should be discussed with the journal editors prior to submission. For detailed submission guidelines, please consult the Guidelines for Contributors on our website (https://creor-ejournal.library.mcgill.ca/about/submissions#onlineSubmissions).
