L’herméneutique biblique africaine est contextuelle. L’auteur se propose de se pencher sur le contexte religieux. L’histoire de l’exégèse en Occident, brièvement présentée, montre que les différentes approches sont tributaires de la relation vécue entre foi et raison, entre le sacré et le profane. En Afrique, les approches religieuses de l’interprétation de la Bible sont illustrées par celles des Églises africaines indépendantes. L’article fait une évaluation de ces approches d’un point de vue culturel, herméneutique et théologique. En s’appuyant sur la double nature littéraire et sacrée de l’orature divinatoire des Yoruba, l’auteur propose une théorie et une théologie de texte pour une herméneutique biblique qui tienne compte du religieux. Prenant à témoin la présence de livres sapientiaux dans le canon de la Bible hébraïque, et l’œuvre herméneutique de la Septante (LXX), notamment dans sa relecture sapientielle de la Loi et de toute l’histoire religieuse d’Israël (Siracide 44–50), l’auteur soutient que la « sapientialisation » de la Parole Révélée est la preuve canonique et théologique que le patrimoine littéraire sapientiel des peuples – d’Afrique – est capax Dei, à titre de révélation naturelle. Pour cette raison, il est le lieu d’une herméneutique biblique croyante. Et ce, dans une logique de relation théologique et « canonique » entre deux littératures révélées : la Bible et le patrimoine sapientiel pluriséculaire des peuples.
